OII Europe youth campaign
Between Intersex Awareness Day and Intersex Day of Solidarity, OII Europe is running a youth campaign.
What do intersex youth need? Empowerment, not normalisation!
Earlier in October 2017, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) called on Member States to “prohibit medically unnecessary sex-“normalising” surgeries, sterilisation and other treatments practised on intersex children without their informed consent”.
Intersex youth who have been subjected to human rights violations of this nature often face isolation and lack empowerment to become agents of change.
Watch Council of Europe rapporteur speak on protections for intersex children:
Intersex people are born with sex characteristics that are not exclusively either male or female. According to the rapporteur Piet De Bruyn, Council of Europe member States should ban surgical interventions to alter the sex characteristics of intersex children until they are able to participate in the decision. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe also recommends laws to protect intersex people against discrimination.
From Intersex Awareness Day right until Intersex Day of Remembrance/Solidarity all donations we receive will go to empowering Intersex youth in Europe.
